What Is Malocclusion?
Malocclusion is an orthodontic condition that literally means bad bite. It is characterized by the misalignment of the upper and lower teeth, causing difficulty and discomfort in biting, chewing, or even speech. Most malocclusions are hereditary. Others are caused by frequent thumb sucking during infancy or early childhood, an injury to the teeth or facial bones, or bruxism (teeth grinding). There are different classifications of malocclusion. The most common type is Class 1, wherein the upper molars slightly overlaps the lower molars. Others include overbite, underbite, crossbite, to name a few. If left untreated, serious malocclusion can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, damaged tooth enamel, teeth loss, and more. Only professional orthodontic treatment can permanently correct malocclusion, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, and other orthodontic conditions in order to restore facial harmony and proper teeth and jaw movement.
