What Is Gum Disease?

Also known as Periodontal disease, gum disease is a bacterial infection in the gums and the tissues and bone surrounding the teeth. If left untreated, the bacterial infection grows and eats away the supporting bone and causes irreversible loss of teeth. The first stage of gum disease is gingivitis, which is the inflammation of the gums. It can be treated with deep cleaning and a trip to your local periodontist and dental hygienist. The next level is periodontitis. It is when the infection is so bad that the bone and soft tissues are severely damaged. It is important to get periodontitis treatment right away before further complications aside from tooth and bone loss arise.
